History:
Lisa Cuddy is a medical doctor, a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, where she was in the top ten per cent of her class. She's highly intelligent and highly motivated. She's 39 years old, from the Chicago suburbs originally, where she grew up with two brothers in a boringly normal family. Her parents have been married nearly fifty years, both of her brothers (one older, one younger) are married, with children, but Cuddy is single and childless. That fact is the result of circumstance, not choice. She was raised in a Jewish home (Reformed), but although she continues to believe in her faith, in real life she rarely sees the inside of a synagogue outside the High Holy Days.

Currently, Dr. Cuddy is the Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Before that she was Head of Internal Medicine. She's worked her way, fairly rapidly, up the ladder to the top position with a combination of determination and an aptitude for administrative issues. Her two closest colleagues are Dr. Gregory House, whom she's known since their days at Michigan. He was a resident and already had a reputation as a maverick. She was still just a lowly med student and didn't have any reputation to speak of, although that's not the way Dr. House likes to tell it now. The other colleague is Dr. James Wilson, top notch oncologist and House's best friend. Wilson helps Cuddy with her most difficult administrative duty: protecting the hospital from Dr. House, and Dr. House from the rest of the world.

Personality:
Lisa Cuddy is all about finding a balance. She exists in a state of almost perpetually being between a rock and a hard place, between doctors who want to care for patients and bureaucracies who want to cut costs, between being a woman and being a professional. She was somewhat surprised to realize that having devoted so much energy to achieving her current level of success, she now has no particular aspirations to go further. She's fallen in love with her hospital, with her staff and her patients and even her revolving secretaries. They're her family and she can't stand the thought of leaving them in someone else's less caring hands.

She's a genuinely warm and compassionate woman who's had to face the humbling fact that the best way she can help patients is not to be their doctor, but to be the boss who runs interference for the other doctors. Fortunately, she is very good at a very difficult job. She's tough and demanding and fair. She doesn't take crap from any one. She's been called a bitch more than once, but she knows better. She's a strong woman and she uses her strength to protect her patients and her staff.

Cuddy does have her insecurities, mostly about her personal life because she hasn't been as successful there as in her professional life. She still hopes to someday find Mr. Right, but she's getting a little tired of the search.
